SAFRANBOLU GEOGRAPHY / 3 Haziran 2009
Safranbolu is a town of Karabük in the west of the Black Sea region. It is a town with historical buildings and structures such as timber houses, mosques, baths, fountains, tombs and guild bazaars. The buildings of Safranbolu have been protected until our day.
It is possible to reach the town - 82 km highway from Gerede junction to Karabük – on Ankara-İstanbul highway. It is 8 km to Karabük, 80 km to Bartın and 105 km to Kastamonu.
There are hills and mountains where the district is located. The lowest point is 300 meters and the highest points is 1750 meters high. The lowest point in the district center is 400 meters and the highest point is 600 meters. The area of the district is 1013 km² and a big part is covered with forests.
The geological formation formation of the town is interesting. Along with deep and long canyon, there are big caverns and streams coming out of the caverns on the slopes of the hills.
The center of district is also located on an interesting geological formation. Tokatlı, Akçasu and Bulak streams pass through the district forming three separate canyons and they are mixed with Araç Brook. It is possible to see buildings in Çarşı area built on the narrow.
The climate of Safranbolu shows the charactaristics of a transition from Black Sea Region to Central Anatolia. The summers are hot , winters are cold, springs and falls are warm, cool and also quite long. It is rainyin spring, fall and winter. Espacially in the recent years, the weather is draught in summer. Average rainfall in a year is 500 mm, and the humidity rate is 60% . Average number of days of snowfall is 35.
There are differences of temperatures between Çarşı and Bağlar since the center of the district is located on different altitudes and it is surrounded with forests. Çarşı section (Old Safranbolu) which is on the side slopes of the hills is warmer and protected against winds, thus winter houses are located here. The snowfall to this area is less than the other parts. Bağlar section which is located on higher altitudes, is open to air currents, cool in summer and snowy in winter. That is why it is the place where are the summer houses are located.
